Editorial Standards

These standards explain how The Destination File researches its guides, makes recommendations, and handles commercial connections and corrections.

Ownership and commercial connections

The Destination File is a travel publication from Retreats Luxury Oceanfront Rentals, the villa and chalet rental business that works in some of the destinations covered here. Experience working in these destinations helps inform our coverage.

In Punta Mita, that business represents villas and residences within Four Seasons Punta Mita directly for their owners, and is paid a commission when a guest books one of them.

This publication does not charge readers and does not take booking payments. The publication supports our rental business through referrals. We disclose that relationship beside recommendations of connected businesses.

When we recommend or link to a rental business in which the publisher has an ownership interest, we place this disclosure beside the recommendation: “The publisher has an ownership interest in this rental business.”

We link only to rental businesses under the same ownership, never to other rental companies or booking platforms. Rental links do not appear in the site’s header, navigation, or footer. Our guides still explain the relevant alternatives and the practical differences between them.

Who is responsible for the guides

Guides are published under the byline The Destination File, which links to the publication’s author page.

AI tools assist with research and drafting. Luis Carlos Rangel reads and approves each guide before publication and selects photographs appropriate to its content. Research draws on identifiable sources and information supplied by the publisher. We identify sources, distinguish firsthand experience where used, and correct confirmed errors.

Three kinds of information sit behind a guide, and we keep them apart. Research drawn from identifiable sources, which the guide names. Business facts supplied by the publisher, such as which villas a rental business represents and how it is paid. And firsthand experience, which appears only where a guide says so explicitly.

Where another person has reviewed a guide, we name them only if that review has actually taken place. Ownership of the publication does not automatically confer authorship or reviewer credit.

How we research

Guides are researched from identifiable sources rather than written up from visits. Where a guide ever does draw on firsthand experience, it says what was visited, experienced, or observed, and when. Nothing here implies a visit that did not take place.

We use relevant official information, current schedules, operators, and other identifiable sources, preferring official and primary sources wherever they exist. Changeable details are checked against those sources during research.

Each guide ends with a reference list naming the sources it drew on. That list names them; it is not a citation apparatus, and the full addresses and working notes stay in our internal research record. A claim we could not attribute to a source we were willing to name does not appear in a guide.

We do not present another publication’s reporting as our own experience.

How we choose what to recommend

We assess options according to their suitability for the reader, location, access, cost, and practical limitations. Recommendations explain meaningful tradeoffs and include relevant alternatives.

Businesses connected to the publisher are assessed using the same criteria. Any ownership interest is disclosed alongside the recommendation.

We do not currently accept paid placements, complimentary or discounted stays, hosted visits, or gifts in exchange for coverage. This policy is separate from our rental business’s booking commissions and the ownership connections disclosed beside relevant recommendations.

Updates and review dates

We change a guide’s editorial review date only after a substantial review of its content. Formatting changes, minor edits, or saving the page again do not qualify.

A guide without an editorial review date has not been marked as substantially reviewed since publication. Readers should confirm time-sensitive arrangements directly before making plans.

Corrections

Report an error through our Contact page, including the guide’s address and the information you believe needs correcting.

We check correction reports and amend confirmed errors. Material corrections include a note explaining what changed and when. Minor wording and typographical fixes do not require a correction note.
