Where to Stay in Antigua: Resort Coast, Harbour or Jumby Bay?

Antigua is small enough that no base is far from the airport, but each part of the island offers a different kind of stay. The choice comes down to whether you want resort convenience, historic harbours and yachts, quiet reef-protected bays or the seclusion of a private island. Deciding where to stay in Antigua starts with the coast you prefer.
The northwest: resorts and convenience
The coast north of St John’s, including Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay, has a concentration of resorts, restaurants and beach bars, and it is close to the airport. It suits travelers who want facilities on the doorstep and an easy arrival.
Jolly Harbour: the walkable middle ground
Between the northwest resorts and the quieter southwest beaches, Jolly Harbour on the west coast is the option for travellers who want facilities within walking distance but a smaller scale than Dickenson Bay. The tourism authority describes Jolly Beach as a mile of sand on the Caribbean side with restaurants, water sports and shopping nearby, and names six restaurants within walking distance and three resorts on or beside it.
Published distances are 16.4 km from the airport and 11.3 km from St John’s, so transfers are shorter than to English Harbour. Darkwood, which the authority calls one of the longest stretches of beach on the island, is a few minutes further south at 18.7 km from the airport, and Hermitage Bay is listed near Jolly Harbour. The west and southwest: long beaches
The west and southwest coast includes beaches such as Ffryes Bay and Darkwood, with a more relaxed feel and sunset views. Properties here suit travelers who want beach days without the busiest resort atmosphere. A car is useful.
English Harbour and Falmouth: history and yachts
The south coast centers on English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, with Nelson’s Dockyard, marinas, restaurants and the viewpoint at Shirley Heights. It is the island’s heritage and sailing hub and suits travelers who enjoy an evening stroll among restored buildings and yachts. It is the farthest area from the airport.
The east: reef-protected and quieter
The east coast has some of the island’s most celebrated bays. The tourism board describes Half Moon Bay as a national park and Long Bay as completely protected by its reef. Accommodation is more limited, and the landscape is wilder.
Jumby Bay Island: a private-island stay
Jumby Bay Island lies just off Antigua’s north coast and is reached by a short boat ride. The Oetker Collection operates the resort, which it describes as a 300-acre private island with suites, villas and private residences. Transfer times and getting around from each base
Tourism authority distances give the scale: Jabberwock Beach on the northeast coast is 3.6 km from the airport, Jolly Beach 16.4 km, Darkwood 18.7 km and Long Bay on the east coast 21.1 km. English Harbour is the longest drive from the airport of the main bases. The airport lists daily taxi service but publishes no fare table, so confirm the price to your base in advance. If you plan to explore more than one coast, a rental car is the practical choice on the west, south and east coasts; the Royal Police Force lists the temporary driver’s licence at EC$50 or US$20 with an original licence and a local address, as published in September 2026.
