High season: roughly December to April
The months from around December to April are generally the driest and most popular. Resorts and villas are busiest, prices are highest, and restaurants in English Harbour and the northwest are lively. Book early, especially for Christmas, New Year and school holidays.
Sailing season
Antigua is one of the Caribbean’s great sailing destinations. Antigua Sailing Week, based around English Harbour and Falmouth, is usually held in late April and early May; the 2026 edition ran from 25 April to 1 May. Event weeks bring crews, spectators and parties, and accommodation in the south fills quickly. Check the organizers’ site for the next edition’s dates.
Sailing Week 2027 and the weekly events in English Harbour
Antigua Sailing Week has announced 21 to 25 April 2027 for its next edition, in an organisers’ notice dated 23 June 2026. That is earlier and shorter than the 2026 regatta, which the organisers’ five-year table lists as 25 April to 1 May, and every edition since 2022 has started in the last week of April. To be in the south for the regatta, book English Harbour and Falmouth first; to avoid it, stay on the northwest or west coast.
Outside the regatta, Shirley Heights Lookout lists its Sunday gathering from 16:30 to 21:30 with steel pan and live bands, and a Thursday reggae evening from 16:30 to 20:30, as published in September 2026. The National Parks Authority runs “Rum in the Ruins” at the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre on Fridays at 17:00, US$25 per person including two drinks, and the park’s sites are open Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 17:00. Late spring and early summer
From May, crowds and prices ease. Weather is usually warm and settled early in the period, making it a good time for a quieter trip.
Hurricane season: June to November
Antigua is in the Atlantic hurricane zone, where the season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. Most weeks are unaffected, but storms can disrupt travel. If you visit during these months, buy insurance that covers weather disruption, follow official forecasts and ask your accommodation about its storm procedures. Some businesses reduce hours or close for part of late summer and autumn.
When storm risk peaks, and what it affects
The National Hurricane Center puts the climatological peak of the Atlantic season on 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. June, July and late November fall within the official season but are historically quieter. Ferry operations are the first thing to go in unsettled weather: Sea Bridge Ferries, which runs the Barbuda crossing, states that its captains monitor conditions and may cancel trips, so keep a Barbuda day flexible rather than fixing it to a departure date. Carnival: late July to early August
Antigua Carnival is the island’s biggest cultural festival. It runs for around ten days and builds to the parade days on the first Monday and Tuesday of August, which were 3 and 4 August in 2026. Expect J’ouvert, calypso and soca competitions and street parades in St John’s. It is a lively time to visit, but traffic around the capital is heavy and some businesses close for the public holidays. For 2027, the dates reported on 4 August 2026 are 20 July to 3 August, the festival’s 70th year under the theme “Legendary 70”. At the time of this review the Festivals Commission’s own site had not published them, so treat them as provisional until it does.
How far ahead to book
- Christmas and New Year: book villas and leading resorts many months ahead, and expect minimum-stay rules.
- Sailing Week: accommodation around English Harbour and Falmouth fills first.
- Carnival: flights and central accommodation get busy with visitors and returning Antiguans.
- Summer and autumn: shorter lead times usually work, but confirm your property and favourite restaurants will be open.
