Punta Cana is warm all year, with average temperatures around 26°C (79°F). The best time to visit Punta Cana depends on how you weigh drier weather against holiday crowds, prices, seaweed and the risk of tropical storms.
High season: roughly December to April
These months are generally drier and less humid, and they are the busiest of the year. Christmas, New Year and the spring school holidays fill villas and resorts early, so book well ahead and expect minimum stays. Easter week is also busy, with many domestic travellers heading to the coast.
What the tourism board says about the weather
Go Dominican Republic, the tourism board site, describes the Punta Cana climate as warm and tropical year-round at 25 to 32°C (77 to 90°F). Its travel-tips page names December to early March as the most pleasant period, with daytime highs between 25 and 27°C, and puts the summer peak at about 32°C. Humidity is described as most intense from April to October, when rainstorms are more frequent but short. Late spring and summer
From May, heat and humidity rise, and the hot season runs roughly from May to October, when highs can reach around 35°C (95°F). Short, heavy showers become more common. Outside the summer school holidays, prices and crowds ease, which can make these months good value.
Hurricane season: June to November
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most weeks pass without a storm, but a tropical system can disrupt flights and plans. If you travel in these months, buy insurance that covers weather disruption, follow forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center and the Dominican Republic’s meteorological service, and ask your villa about its storm procedures.
When the risk peaks
The season is long, but the risk is not evenly spread. The National Hurricane Center’s climatology puts the peak of the Atlantic season at 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, and the average first named storm around 20 June. The tourism board calls September the most active month. In practice, June and early July carry lower statistical risk than late August through early October, and late November is close to the season’s end. Sargassum seaweed
Sargassum can wash up on Caribbean and Atlantic beaches, usually more in the warmer months, and the amount varies widely from year to year and from beach to beach. Some resorts clear it daily. Check recent reports close to your dates and ask your villa team about the nearest beach. The University of South Florida publishes monthly Sargassum outlook bulletins for the region.

The University of South Florida’s outlook bulletin of 31 August 2026 reported that the total sargassum amount in every region except the east Atlantic still exceeded the 75th percentile of the 2011 to 2025 record for August, after declining through July. It expected beaching around the Caribbean to continue into the autumn but less severely than in summer, with amounts falling until possibly November. The practical reading is that late summer and early autumn 2026 were above-average months, and that a winter or spring visit will usually find cleaner sand. Dates worth planning around
- Christmas and New Year: the busiest and most expensive weeks.
- February: carnival celebrations take place in towns across the country, and Independence Day falls on 27 February.
- Golf tournament week: access to Corales tightens around its PGA Tour event, so check the dates if golf is a priority.
