Marietas Islands Day Trip: What to Know Before You Go

A trip to the Marietas Islands can include time on the water, wildlife viewing and permitted water activities, but it does not automatically include entry to Playa del Amor, the Hidden Beach. Choose the itinerary before choosing the boat, and confirm what happens if the activity you most want cannot operate. A Marietas Islands day trip is most rewarding when those details are settled in advance.

The islands, the park and the Hidden Beach

Parque Nacional Islas Marietas is a protected area offshore from Punta Mita administered by CONANP, Mexico’s protected-areas commission. Playa del Amor lies within the park; its access arrangements are distinct from a general islands excursion.

Check the park calendar before arranging transport

CONANP’s visitor directory currently lists the park as open Tuesday through Sunday, 8am to 6pm, and Playa del Amor Wednesday through Sunday, 8am to 5pm. Reconfirm the schedule for your travel dates: published opening hours do not guarantee a departure or beach admission.

Make Hidden Beach access explicit in the booking

Ask whether the quoted itinerary includes Playa del Amor or only a trip around the islands and other permitted activities. Request the answer in writing, including any separate admission arrangements and what remains subject to conditions on the day.

Ask how the visit is organized, what swimming ability is needed, which age or health restrictions the operator applies, and what happens if access is unavailable. Compare the alternatives: another activity, a changed departure, a partial refund or cancellation may be very different outcomes. Do not assume the product name settles those terms.

Ask for current capacity and time limits rather than relying on an old tour description. A reservation cannot override park instructions, sea conditions or a decision to suspend an activity.

Choose the departure point and boat together

Confirm the actual meeting point before booking your road transfer. An excursion advertised for Punta Mita visitors may depart elsewhere in the bay. Compare the time on the boat, the land journey, check-in time and the return arrangement as one outing.

Ask about shade, seating, toilets, storage for dry belongings, the way passengers board, and the equipment supplied. Anyone who needs a step-free route or assistance getting aboard should confirm the specific boat and landing arrangements before paying.

For families, check child-size life jackets, minimum ages and whether adults can remain aboard with a child who does not take part in a water activity. A shorter itinerary may be more useful than one with a long list of stops.

Prepare for a protected-area visit

CONANP requires life jackets for water activities and prohibits alcohol, littering, removal of wildlife and single-use plastics. Its directory also says footwear is not permitted during aquatic or beach activities. Ask your operator for the packing instructions for the exact excursion and follow guides’ and park staff’s directions.

Keep valuables to a minimum, protect items that must stay dry, and check how drinking water and refreshments are provided. Confirm equipment sizes in advance rather than assuming everything aboard will fit your party.

Keep a workable alternative

Leave some flexibility around the excursion if it is a priority, but do not promise yourself that another day will guarantee entry. Ask when the operator makes weather decisions, how it contacts passengers, and whether a change affects a separately booked transfer.
