In short

Fly into Cancún International (CUN), about an hour north by road. A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest option for families and groups; rental cars suit day-trippers, and ADO buses suit light travelers. The Tren Maya stops at Playa del Carmen, but its station is outside the center.

Getting to Playa del Carmen is easy by Riviera Maya standards: it has no airport of its own, but Cancún International, one of the busiest airports in Latin America, is about an hour up the coast by road. The main decisions are how to make that transfer, how to handle a large group and its luggage, and whether to add Cozumel or Tulum to the trip. This guide covers each. For an overview of the town, see what Playa del Carmen is.

Fly into Cancún (CUN)

Cancún International Airport is the gateway for the whole Riviera Maya, with nonstop flights from dozens of cities in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America. It has several terminals, so check which one your airline uses before arranging a pickup. From the airport, Highway 307 runs south along the coast to Playa del Carmen, a drive of roughly an hour in normal traffic, and more at peak times.

Transfer options from the airport

  • Private transfer: the simplest option for families and groups. A driver meets you outside arrivals with a sign and takes you directly to the villa. Many villa managers can book one; confirm the vehicle size for your group and luggage.
  • Rental car: useful if you plan day trips to cenotes, Akumal or Tulum. Parking downtown is limited, but Playacar villas usually have parking.
  • Shared shuttle: cheaper for couples, but with stops at several hotels on the way.
  • Bus: ADO runs coaches from the airport terminals to Playa del Carmen’s bus stations, a good budget option for light travelers.

Avoid arranging transport with touts in the terminal. Book in advance, keep the operator’s phone number to hand, and walk past the sales desks between baggage claim and the exit.

The Tren Maya

The Tren Maya railway, which opened in stages from late 2023, has stations at Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Playa del Carmen station is outside the center, so you still need a taxi at the end, and it rarely beats a door-to-door transfer for a family with luggage. It is, however, an interesting way to travel on to Tulum or further into the Yucatán.

Arriving at a villa in Playacar

Most villas in Playa del Carmen are inside Playacar, which is gated. Give your driver the villa name and address, and make sure the villa manager has registered your arrival with security, particularly for late-night flights. Ask in advance about key collection and the check-in time, and whether groceries can be stocked before you arrive; after a long flight, it is good to find breakfast in the fridge.

Adding Cozumel or Tulum

Playa del Carmen is the departure point for the passenger ferries to Cozumel, which leave frequently from the central ferry terminal and cross in under an hour; see getting to Cozumel. Tulum is about an hour south on Highway 307, and many visitors split a week between the two; see getting to Tulum. On the way, Akumal and the cenotes make good stops; see the Akumal day trip.

Traveling as a large group

Groups of ten or more should plan transfers as carefully as the villa. Book vehicles by passenger count and by luggage, since golf bags, strollers and dive gear fill a van quickly. If flights arrive hours apart, it is usually cheaper and calmer to book two or three smaller transfers than to make early arrivals wait at the airport. Share one simple arrival sheet with everyone: the villa address, the gate procedure, the manager’s number and the driver’s details. For celebrations and multigenerational trips, ask the villa whether it can arrange a welcome dinner on the first night, so nobody has to plan a restaurant after a travel day.

Getting to Playa del Carmen: practical tips

  • Allow at least three hours between landing and any dinner reservation on arrival day.
  • Carry some pesos for tips and tolls, and keep the villa manager’s phone number offline.
  • On departure, leave Playa del Carmen at least three and a half hours before an international flight, more in peak season.
  • If you are traveling with a large group, split into two vehicles rather than one oversized van with luggage on the roof.

Getting to Playa del Carmen is rarely the hard part of the trip; the details that make it smooth are a booked transfer, a registered arrival at the gate and a realistic first evening. Once arrivals are settled, compare neighborhoods in where to stay in Playa del Carmen. If this is your first villa rental, booking a villa for the first time walks through the process.
