Getting to Grand Cayman: Flights, Arrival and Getting Around

Grand Cayman is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach from North America. Its airport sits in George Town, minutes from the capital and close to Seven Mile Beach, and nonstop flights link it to several US and Canadian cities and to London. Getting to Grand Cayman is simple; the planning is mostly about arrival day and getting around.

Getting to Grand Cayman by air

Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) is the main gateway to all three Cayman Islands, and the tourism department says more than a million visitors arrive through it each year. According to the department, Miami is about 90 minutes away on daily nonstop flights, New York about four hours, and there is weekly nonstop service from Los Angeles. Other US hubs, Toronto and Ottawa have regular flights, and British Airways flies from London several times a week. Routes change by season, so check current schedules.

Airlines and gateways as listed in September 2026

The tourism department’s flight page lists Cayman Airways, American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country, British Airways, Air Canada, Porter and WestJet, with US gateways from Miami and New York to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Denver and Los Angeles; Toronto is served by Air Canada, Porter and WestJet and Ottawa by Porter. Cayman Airways flies a Boeing 737-8 fleet year-round from Miami, Tampa, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Kingston, Panama City, La Ceiba and Havana, seasonally from Denver and Montego Bay, with a 55 lb per-bag allowance that accepts dive and golf bags. It is the only airline serving the sister islands.

Private aircraft use the general aviation terminal, where Atlantic Aviation is the fixed-base operator. On entry, passports need six months’ validity, visitors must hold a return or onward ticket, and the immigration card handed out on the aircraft must be kept for departure. The sister islands

Cayman Airways flies daily from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, which makes it easy to add a few quieter days to a trip.

On arrival

The airport is about five minutes from downtown George Town, and many hotels and villas on Seven Mile Beach and the South Sound are a short drive away. Rum Point and the North Side are farther: the tourism department puts Rum Point at about 45 minutes by car from most hotels. Confirm your transfer or car pickup before you land. Getting around

• Taxis: available at the airport and hotels. Confirm the fare before setting off.
• Rental cars: useful for exploring the North Side and East End. Driving is on the left, and roundabouts are common. Ask the rental company what documents you need.
• Public buses: minibuses serve the main routes, but they are less practical for villa stays.
• Boats: operators run trips across the North Sound to Stingray City, Rum Point and Starfish Point.

Taxis, buses and hiring a car

Taxis are dispatched from the arrivals area by an airport attendant, who issues a ticket identifying the driver. Fares follow a national schedule in force since 2 August 2019: the first two bags are free and one rate covers up to four passengers. The Public Transport Unit’s table (in US dollars) gives US$27 to the Ritz-Carlton, US$28 to the Westin and US$34 to the Kimpton Seafire on Seven Mile Beach, US$56 to Bodden Town and US$127–129 to the East End resorts. Rum Point is not listed, so quote it in advance; the CI:GO app returns fares in both currencies.

Public buses start around 6 am with fares from CI$2.50; licensed buses carry blue number plates, stop when flagged, and nine numbered routes fan out from the Edward Street depot in George Town. New route maps went up at about 25 shelters from 22 August 2025, and on 17 April 2026 the government confirmed no fare increase had been approved.

The airport is within walking distance of most rental agencies. Traffic drives on the left; the tourism department says visitors aged 21 and over can obtain a temporary driving permit at the counter, and licence fees were revised on 1 September 2026, so confirm the cost when booking. Arriving by sea

George Town is also a cruise port. If you are joining a private yacht, arrange clearance and berthing with your captain in advance.

• Allow extra time at the airport at busy weekend times.
• Book rental cars early for holiday weeks.
• Buy groceries before driving to the North Side or East End, where shops are fewer.
