What Is Verbier? The Village, Val de Bagnes and the 4 Vallées

Verbier is often described simply as a Swiss ski resort, but the name covers three different things. There is the village itself, a resort of chalets on a sunny terrace. There is the Val de Bagnes, the valley and municipality it belongs to. And there is the 4 Vallées, the linked ski area that Verbier opens onto. Understanding how those fit together makes every later decision, from transfers to lift passes, easier. So what is Verbier, exactly? This guide explains each part.
What is Verbier? The village
Verbier sits at about 1,500 meters on a south-facing terrace above the Val de Bagnes, in the French-speaking canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland. It is a resort village rather than a historic town: chalets and apartment buildings spread across the hillside around a small central square, with the main lift station at Médran on the edge of the center.

The Val de Bagnes
Verbier belongs to the municipality of Val de Bagnes. Below the village, Le Châble is the valley base, with the railway station and a gondola that climbs to Verbier. Several smaller villages and hamlets lie along the valley and on the slopes around the resort. Some chalets marketed under the Verbier name are in these surrounding areas, which can be quieter but usually need more transport planning.
The 4 Vallées ski area
Verbier is the largest resort in the 4 Vallées, a linked ski area that the lift company describes as offering 410 kilometers of runs and freeride routes. Besides Verbier, the area includes Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon. The highest point is Mont Fort, at 3,330 meters, with views across the Alps to peaks including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
The lift company also sells access to a smaller Verbier sector, which includes Verbier, La Tzoumaz-Savoleyres and Bruson, with 106 kilometers of runs and 33 lifts. Savoleyres and Bruson: the two smaller sectors
Two smaller sectors flank the main slopes and open on different dates. Savoleyres is reached by free shuttle line 1 and its lift, and links over the ridge to La Tzoumaz, where a toboggan run drops 711 metres. Bruson faces Verbier across the valley, reached by an eight-seater gondola from Le Châble; the lift company calls it a calm, family-orientated area with forest routes and a top station at La Pasay, 2,166 metres. What Verbier is known for
Verbier’s reputation rests on its advanced terrain and off-piste skiing. Each spring the resort hosts Xtreme Verbier, the finale of the Freeride World Tour, on the Bec des Rosses face. That profile can make the resort sound intimidating, but it also has dedicated beginner areas and long intermediate runs. Off-piste skiing should always be done with a qualified mountain guide.

How people get there
Most international visitors fly into Geneva. The local tourism office gives a driving time of about 1 hour 50 minutes from Geneva Airport, and trains run to Le Châble, where a gondola or bus completes the journey. Our guide to getting to Verbier compares the options.
