Land’s End and El Arco: How to See Cabo’s Landmark

El Arco, the rock arch at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, is the most recognizable sight in Los Cabos. It stands at Land’s End, the rocky headland just beyond the Cabo San Lucas marina, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. You cannot drive to it. Every visit starts on the water, which is why the choice of boat, the day’s conditions and the current access rules matter more than the photograph you have in mind. A protected area, not just a viewpoint

Land’s End and the surrounding waters lie within the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area (Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cabo San Lucas), managed by CONANP, Mexico’s national protected-areas commission. CONANP lists a daily access fee per person, with exemptions for some visitors, including children under 12. Many tour operators collect or include this fee; ask whether your price covers it.

CONANP identifies sea lions and humpback whales among the area’s representative wildlife. Keep your distance from sea lions resting on the rocks, do not feed wildlife, and follow the instructions of park staff and your operator.

Four ways to see El Arco

• Water taxi: the simplest option. Small boats leave from the marina and Médano Beach, pass the arch, and can drop passengers at Lover’s Beach. Agree on the route, the return pickup time and the total price before boarding.
• Glass-bottom boat: a short tour that adds a view of marine life without getting in the water. It suits families and anyone with limited time.
• Kayak or paddleboard: the tourism board lists paddling to Lover’s Beach as an option, either guided or with rented equipment. The route crosses a busy boating area, so a guided trip is the safer choice unless you are an experienced paddler.
• Snorkeling, diving or sailing: guided snorkel and dive trips visit sites near the arch, and sunset sailing trips view it from farther offshore.

Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach

Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor) sits on the Sea of Cortez side of the headland and is reached only by water. It can suit a swim when conditions allow, but do not assume a lifeguard is present. Check conditions before leaving the marina and again when you arrive.

Closures happen

The municipality restricts access to El Arco and Divorce Beach when sea conditions are dangerous, as it did in early August 2026. These restrictions are enforced with signage and surveillance. A boat operator’s willingness to take you close to the rocks does not override an official closure. If access is restricted, a view from the water or from shore is the right choice that day.

When to go

Morning trips often have calmer water, and a sunset sail offers the most dramatic light on the rocks. Choosing an operator

• Confirm the boat, the number of passengers and whether life jackets in the right sizes are provided.
• Ask whether the protected-area fee is included.
• Agree on the exact route and whether a Lover’s Beach stop is included.
• For drop-offs, agree on a pickup time and exchange contact details.
• Pay the agreed price, not a price that changes once you are on the water.

Seeing it from land
