In short
Palmilla is a gated resort and residential enclave on the San José side of the Los Cabos Corridor. It combines one of the area’s beaches most commonly used for swimming, 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus golf and a long-established resort. It suits families, golfers and groups who want calm water and a quieter base between the two towns.
Palmilla in Los Cabos is one of the few places on the Corridor where a sheltered beach, championship golf and private homes sit side by side. It lies on the San José del Cabo side of the Tourist Corridor, closer to the airport and to San José’s historic center than to Cabo San Lucas. The enclave grew around a small hotel opened in the mid-1950s for Abelardo Rodríguez, the son of a former Mexican president, and it has kept a settled, residential character since. For how the Corridor compares with the two towns, see where to stay in Los Cabos.
The beach at Palmilla
Palmilla’s beach is the main reason many visitors choose the area. The tourism board describes a protected cove with commonly calm water and lists Palmilla among the beaches suited to swimming, paddleboarding and snorkeling. Facilities on the public beach are limited, so bring water and shade.
Calm is a tendency, not a guarantee. The municipality flies beach flags at Palmilla as elsewhere, and a red or black flag closes the water whatever the beach’s reputation. Check the flag on the day, and see swimmable beaches in Los Cabos for how the system works.
Golf at Palmilla
Palmilla Golf Club has 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus, opened in 1992 and described by the tourism board as his first design in Latin America. The three nines, Mountain, Arroyo and Ocean, run from desert arroyos toward the sea. Public play is offered when tee times allow, so confirm access when you book rather than assuming it. For how Palmilla fits with the other courses, see golf in Los Cabos.
How the enclave works
Palmilla combines a resort, the golf club and a gated residential community of private homes. Homes range from houses directly on the beach to properties on the hillside and along the fairways, and the difference matters: a beach-level house gives direct access to the cove, while a hillside house trades that for elevation and a wider view. Ask which part of Palmilla a property is in and exactly how guests reach the sand.
Because the community is gated, guests, chefs and deliveries are registered at the entrance. The resort’s restaurants are the closest dining. San José del Cabo’s center is a short drive, Cabo San Lucas a longer one along the Corridor; see where to eat in Los Cabos for both.
Palmilla or Pedregal?
The two enclaves most often compared are Palmilla and Pedregal, and they answer different questions. Palmilla puts a calm beach and golf first, sits closer to the airport and San José, and is residential and quiet after dark. Pedregal puts views and the town first: it rises above the Cabo San Lucas marina, with downtown restaurants and boat departures a short drive away, but its Pacific shore is not for swimming and its streets are steep. Families and golfers tend to lean toward Palmilla; groups who want sunsets over the Pacific and nights out in town tend to lean toward Pedregal. Our guide to Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas covers the other side of the choice.
