Getting to Verbier: Flights, Trains and Transfers

Verbier is one of the more accessible major Alpine resorts from an international airport, but the last part of the journey involves a climb from the valley to the village. The right option depends on how much luggage you have, whether you want a car during your stay, and where your accommodation sits on the hillside. Getting to Verbier is simpler than it looks once you pick a route.

Airports

Geneva is the usual gateway for international visitors. The Verbier – Val de Bagnes tourism office gives a driving time of about 1 hour 50 minutes from Geneva Airport and about 3 hours 15 minutes from Zurich Airport, in normal conditions. Sion, in Valais, is much closer, but it has far fewer scheduled flights. Check which airports your airline actually serves for your dates.

By train: Le Châble and the gondola

The rail route ends at Le Châble, the valley village below Verbier. From there, a gondola or bus takes about 20 minutes to reach the resort. The tourism office lists travel times to Le Châble of about 2 hours 40 minutes from Geneva, 1 hour 40 minutes from Lausanne and 4 hours from Zurich.

The train suits travelers with manageable luggage who do not need a car in the resort. Before choosing it, check how you will get from the gondola arrival point to your accommodation with bags; ask your host whether they can meet you or arrange a taxi. The tourism office also mentions weekend winter services, the Verbier Express and VosAlpes Express, that run directly to the slopes; check current timetables and conditions when you book.

Geneva Airport station and the last leg in practice

Geneva Airport’s station is directly beneath the terminal, a five-minute walk from arrivals. At Le Châble the lift company runs the gondola to Verbier daily, winter and summer, from 5.10 am to 11.55 pm, with free parking at the base for up to 10 days. For winter 2026/27 the Verbier Express runs direct from Geneva Airport on weekends from 13 December 2026 to 21 March 2027, and the VosAlpes Express from Fribourg from 13 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. By car

Driving gives the most flexibility, especially for families or groups with equipment. The tourism office lists driving times of about 2 hours from Geneva, 1 hour 20 minutes from Lausanne and 3 hours from Zurich.

• Motorway vignette: Swiss motorways require a vignette. The tourism office lists the annual vignette at CHF 40. Rental cars from Swiss locations normally have one; confirm if you collect a car in another country.
• Winter equipment: snow chains may be required on mountain roads, and winter tires are recommended. Carry chains and know how to fit them.
• Parking: there are parking facilities in both Le Châble and Verbier. The tourism office notes free parking for up to 10 days at the P4 car park in Le Châble, which can suit visitors who drive to the valley and take the gondola up. Ask your accommodation whether parking is included and how access works in snow.

Private transfers

A prearranged private transfer from Geneva is the simplest option for many visitors, particularly groups, families and anyone arriving late. Give the operator your flight number, the number of passengers, the amount of luggage and ski equipment, and the exact address of your accommodation. Ask whether the vehicle has winter tires and chains, and whether the driver can reach your chalet’s door or will stop at the nearest accessible point.

Do you need a car in Verbier?

Not always. If your accommodation is within walking distance of the Médran lift and the village center, you may not need a car at all. If it is higher on the hillside or in a surrounding hamlet, a car, a shuttle or a chalet driver becomes more useful. • Build extra time into Saturday arrivals and departures, when many visitors change over.
• Check road and weather conditions before leaving the airport.
• Keep essentials in your hand luggage in case skis or bags arrive late.
• Agree in advance how you will collect keys if you arrive outside office hours.
