When to Ski Verbier: Season Dates, Peak Weeks and Spring Snow

Verbier’s ski season generally runs from December to April, but those months are not interchangeable. Early December can be quiet with limited terrain, the holiday weeks are the busiest and most expensive, midwinter usually brings the coldest snow, and spring offers long days and softer slopes. The right choice depends on the group, the budget and how much of the ski area you want to use. Knowing when to ski Verbier depends on snow, crowds and budget.

The season calendar

For winter 2026/27, the See Verbier resort guide lists planned season dates of 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027 for the Verbier area, 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 for Savoleyres, and 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 for Bruson. The lift company describes the wider 4 Vallées as operating from November to the end of April. All dates depend on snow conditions, so check the lift company’s live information before you travel.

Opening is often gradual. In the 2024/25 season, for example, the lift company opened the Verbier area daily from 30 November and announced that the entire 4 Vallées would be open from 14 December. Early-season visitors should expect some lifts and runs to open in stages.

Opening in stages: what runs in early December and April

The lift company’s 2026/27 beginners’ ticket page states that from 5 December the Les Esserts and La Tzoumaz magic carpets and the Les Esserts lift open, and that through 26 April an alternative beginner area runs at Les Ruinettes. Savoleyres and Bruson follow on 12 December 2026. Ski schools price by week: the Swiss Ski School lists 2026/27 peak weeks of 21–25 December, 28 December–1 January, 4–8 January, 8–12, 15–19 and 22–26 February, 1–5 March, 29 March–2 April and 5–9 April, a proxy for when the village is fullest. Early season: December before Christmas

The weeks before Christmas are usually quieter, and accommodation can be easier to find. The tradeoff is uncertainty: snow cover and the amount of open terrain vary from year to year. Book flexible arrangements if you can, or consider a shorter trip to limit the risk.

Peak weeks: Christmas, New Year and February

The festive period and the European school holiday weeks, particularly in February, are the busiest times of the season. Expect higher prices, minimum stays and lift queues at peak times. Chalets and ski instructors for these weeks are often booked many months ahead. If your dates are fixed to school holidays, book accommodation, ski school and any guiding as early as possible.

Midwinter: January

Outside the holiday weeks, January is often one of the best times for skiers who want cold temperatures, good snow preservation and fewer people. Days are shorter and colder, so bring proper layers and plan lunch stops.

Spring: March and April

Spring brings longer, sunnier days and, on many afternoons, softer snow on lower and south-facing slopes. Higher terrain toward Mont Fort, which reaches 3,330 meters, generally holds its snow longer than the lower sectors. Easter can be busy when it falls in the season.

Spring is also freeride season. Xtreme Verbier, the finale of the Freeride World Tour, is held on the Bec des Rosses face; in 2026 the finals were held in late March. Event weeks bring more visitors, so check the date if you want to watch, or avoid it if you prefer a quieter trip.

Off-piste and avalanche conditions

Conditions for off-piste skiing change throughout the season and can change quickly after snowfall or wind. When to ski Verbier: quick guide

• Quietest skiing: early December and January outside the holidays.
• Most reliable for a big group trip: January through March, booked early.
• Families tied to school holidays: book the February or Easter week as early as possible.
• Long sunny days: March and early April.
