Where to Stay in Zermatt: Lift Access, Quarters and Arrival

Zermatt is more compact than many Alpine resorts, but where you stay still shapes each day. With no cars in the village, the walk from your door to the lift base, the station and the restaurants becomes the main practical consideration. The village also climbs in places, so a short distance on a map can mean a steep walk in ski boots. Deciding where to stay in Zermatt starts with lift access.

Start with your lift base

Three main lift systems leave from Zermatt: the Sunnegga funicular, the Gornergrat railway and the cable cars to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Decide which you will use most, depending on your ability and plans, then look for accommodation within an easy walk or a short e-bus ride. Lift access, base by base

Gornergrat: the cogwheel railway’s valley station is directly opposite Zermatt railway station, so anything near Bahnhofplatz gives flat access to the 33-minute ride to 3,089 metres.

Sunnegga: the funicular reaches 2,288 metres in 4.5 minutes from the Getwing/Sunnegga e-bus stop. It serves the Wolli beginners’ park, and the beginner pass covers only Zermatt–Sunnegga, Sunnegga–Blauherd, Eisfluh, the Findel chairlift and the Leisee shuttle, so families with learners should stay within a short walk.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: the valley station for the Furi cable cars, including the 100-person cabins opened in 2023 beside the Matterhorn Express, is at the southern end of the village, with ski rental, lockers and its own e-bus and e-taxi station; the 3,883-metre top station is 40 to 45 minutes away with changes. The village centre

The center, around the main street near the station, puts restaurants, shops and the Sunnegga and Gornergrat departures within an easy walk. It suits groups who want everything close by, families who value short walks, and anyone arriving by train with luggage. The tradeoff is more activity in the evenings.

Winkelmatten and the quieter quarters

Winkelmatten, a residential area south of the center, is known for calm and views of the Matterhorn. It suits travelers who want privacy and are happy with a short walk or e-bus ride to the center. Other residential areas on the slopes around the village offer similar tradeoffs; check the gradient of the walk and the nearest e-bus stop.

Walking gradients and the free e-bus

Zermatt Tourism describes Winkelmatten as the southern end of the village, some way from the centre and reached on foot or by electric bus. The level ground follows the river and Bahnhofstrasse; streets climbing the valley sides become steep quickly, which counts double in ski boots. Ask any property for the walk in minutes to its nearest lift and e-bus stop, and whether it uses steps.

Two free e-bus lines cover the village: the green line Bahnhof–Getwing/Sunnegga–Kirchbrücke–Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, and the red Winkelmatten line Bahnhof–Spiss–Kirchbrücke–Wichje–Schliematta–Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. First departures are shortly after 07:00, and the Matterhorn App tracks buses live. A base on either line suits couples and quiet stays more than groups moving between restaurants each evening.

Near the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lifts

Accommodation toward the southern end of the village is closer to the cable cars for the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Italian connection. It suits strong skiers heading for high terrain every day. Check the walk to the center for evenings.

Hotels, apartments or a chalet

Zermatt has a wide range of hotels, from traditional to luxury, which suit shorter stays and couples. Apartments work for small groups who want a kitchen. Chalets suit families and larger groups; many offer catering or a chef on request.

Arrival arrangements from Täsch and the station

The Täsch shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 5:55 to 21:55, then hourly until about 00:30 or 01:00 (CHF 17.20 return in September 2026); licensed electric taxis from Täsch suit late flights or families with skis. Many hotels run electric cars to the station and taxi rank and ask for your arrival time in advance; apartments and chalets usually do not, so budget for an e-taxi or a walk with luggage.
