When to Visit Zermatt: Ski Season, Summer Skiing and Hiking
Winter and peak weeks, spring skiing, summer hiking and glacier skiing, and the quieter shoulder months.

Zermatt is a year-round destination. Its altitude means skiing is possible on the glacier far beyond the usual winter months, and summer brings some of the best hiking in the Alps. The right time depends on what you want to do and how busy you are happy for the village to be. Knowing when to visit Zermatt depends on whether you ski, hike or sightsee.
Winter
The main ski season covers the winter months, when the full network of lifts across Sunnegga, Gornergrat, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Italian side is usually in operation. Exact opening and closing dates vary by area and by year, so check the lift company’s timetable for your dates.
Christmas, New Year and the European school holiday weeks, especially in February, are the busiest times. Book accommodation, ski school and restaurants early for these periods.
Winter 2026/27 dates as published
Zermatt Bergbahnen’s ski pass page, checked in September 2026, gives the winter season as 1 November 2026 to early May 2027, with the Sunnegga/Rothorn and Gornergrat sectors opening on 28 November 2026 and closing on 11 and 18 April 2027. Until 28 November only the glacier side is skiing. The lowest pass prices apply from 1 to 27 November 2026 and 19 April to 2 May 2027, the clearest published signal of the quiet weeks. The Gornergrat railway is suspended for construction from 2 to 14 November 2026.
Zermatters’ 2026/27 high season, when courses cost about 15 percent more, is 12 December to 10 January, 6 February to 7 March and 20 March to 4 April. The SLF avalanche bulletin is issued daily at 17:00 through winter and spring, with an 08:00 update at danger level 3 or above; skiing in Zermatt covers what that means off-piste.
Midwinter
January outside the holidays is often quieter, with cold temperatures that keep the snow in good condition. Days are short and high lifts can be affected by wind, so build flexibility into your plans.
Spring
March and April bring longer, sunnier days. Zermatt’s altitude helps preserve snow later in the season than many resorts, and lunch on a sunny terrace becomes part of the day. Easter can be busy.
Summer
In summer, Zermatt is a base for hiking, mountaineering and sightseeing, with lifts and the Gornergrat railway giving access to high trails and viewpoints. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise allows glacier skiing in summer, which draws ski teams and keen skiers. Check which lifts and pistes are open; lift availability can be limited in some periods.
Summer 2026 lift and rail seasons
Summer ski pass rates applied from 4 May to 31 October 2026, with the sightseeing Peak Pass valid 1 May to 31 October. The Gornergrat railway ran every 24 minutes from 08:00 between 20 April and 1 November 2026, and the Glacier Express summer timetable ran from 2 May to 10 October, with no service from 11 October to 4 December 2026. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise return fares rose from CHF 120 to CHF 132 in July and August, a fair proxy for the busiest weeks. Zermatt Tourism rates the 5-lake route from Blauherd to Sunnegga as T2, 11.3 kilometres and about 3 hours 30 minutes, best from June to September.

Shoulder seasons
Late spring and autumn are the quietest times. Some lifts, hotels and restaurants close or reduce operations for maintenance. In a notice dated 3 April 2026, for example, the lift company said that until 30 September 2026 only the Zermatt to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise section would be open. Always check current lift information before booking a shoulder-season trip.
Holidays, ski school and altitude
If you are travelling with children during school holidays, book ski school or private instructors when you book accommodation, because popular slots sell out. The village sits at around 1,600 metres, while the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise reaches close to 3,900 metres, so it is far colder and windier at the top than in the village. High lifts can close at short notice in strong wind. Pack warm layers and sun protection, and keep a bad-weather plan built around the village, spas and restaurants.
When to visit Zermatt: quick guide
