Getting to Cozumel: Direct Flights or the Ferry

Fly straight to the island, or land in Cancún and cross by ferry: how to choose, and what each route really takes.

In short

Fly direct to Cozumel (CZM) if a nonstop or one-stop flight works from your city; it is the quickest way to a villa. Otherwise fly into Cancún, transfer about an hour to Playa del Carmen and take a passenger ferry of under an hour to San Miguel. Allow extra time, and check the weather for the crossing.

There are two ways of getting to Cozumel: fly straight to the island, or fly into Cancún and cross from Playa del Carmen by ferry. The first is simpler when the right flight exists; the second opens up far more flight choices at the cost of a longer travel day. This guide compares the two so you can choose before booking flights. For an overview of the island itself, see what Cozumel is.

Option 1: fly direct to Cozumel (CZM)

Cozumel International Airport sits on the edge of San Miguel, the island’s only town, and is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), which also runs Cancún airport. It handled roughly 650,000 passengers in 2025, a fraction of Cancún’s traffic, which makes arrivals quick. Nonstop flights connect it with several US cities, including Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Atlanta, Denver and Minneapolis/St. Paul, some of them seasonal or only on certain days of the week. Check current schedules for your dates, since routes change from season to season.

Most villas are roughly 10 to 40 minutes from the airport by car, depending on whether they are north or south of town. Many villa managers arrange a transfer or can meet you at arrivals; ask when you book, particularly if you are a large group with luggage and dive gear.

Option 2: Cancún, then the ferry from Playa del Carmen

Cancún International Airport (CUN) has far more flights and airlines. From there, the route is a drive of about an hour south to Playa del Carmen, then a passenger ferry across the channel to the pier in downtown San Miguel. The crossing takes under an hour. Two operators, Xcaret Xailing and Winjet, run frequent departures throughout the day from Playa del Carmen’s central ferry terminal, subject to the weather. Buy tickets from the operator directly or at the pier, and check the day’s schedule rather than relying on an old timetable.

Allow a realistic buffer. Arriving in Cancún at midday, clearing immigration, driving to Playa del Carmen and waiting for a boat can mean reaching your villa in the late afternoon. On a windy day the crossing can be rough, and ferries can be delayed or suspended in bad weather. For anyone prone to seasickness, flying direct is worth a lot.

Which is better for your group?

  • Fly direct if a nonstop or single-connection flight works from your city, you have young children or older travelers, or you are bringing a lot of luggage or dive equipment.
  • Fly to Cancún if you need more flight choices, lower fares, or you are splitting the trip between the mainland and the island, for example a few nights in Playa del Carmen first.
  • Mixed groups often do both: some fly direct, others come by ferry, and everyone meets at the villa.

Bringing a car across

There is also a vehicle ferry to Cozumel from the mainland south of Playa del Carmen, but it is slow and mainly used for freight and residents’ cars. For visitors it rarely makes sense. Car rental on the island is easy, and many villa guests rent for a day or two to see the east coast rather than for the whole stay.

The Tren Maya

The Tren Maya passenger railway has stations at Cancún Airport and Playa del Carmen. It is an interesting journey, but the stations are not at the ferry terminal, so with luggage a private transfer from Cancún straight to the pier is usually simpler.

Getting to Cozumel: practical tips

  • Keep a copy of your villa’s address and the manager’s phone number offline; taxi drivers know areas better than house names.
  • Carry some pesos for tips, taxis and the ferry terminal.
  • Do not book the last ferry of the day as your only plan after a long flight.
  • If you are arriving on a cruise-heavy day, expect busier roads near the piers.

For most villa guests, getting to Cozumel comes down to one question: is there a good flight to CZM from your city on your dates? If there is, take it and arrange a transfer with the villa. If not, Cancún and the ferry work well, as long as you land early enough to make the crossing in daylight and keep a little flexibility for the weather. Once you know how you will arrive, compare areas in where to stay in Cozumel. If you are new to renting a house, our first-time villa booking guide explains deposits, arrival instructions and what to ask the manager. The same Cancún arrival logic applies to getting to Tulum.
